What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new way of providing support to Australians living with permanent and significant disability. The independent agency that is responsible for delivering the scheme is the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)

Who can access the NDIS?

To become a participant in the NDIS your patients will need to be:

  • Under 65 years of age
  • Be an Australian citizen or holder of a permanent or special protection visa
  • Have a permanent disability that effects their ability to take participate in everyday activities
  • Live in Australia where the NDIS is available

The Role of the GP

GP’s and other health professionals may be asked to provide evidence to support their patients request to access the NDIS. This could include:

  • Filling in an NDIS Supporting Evidence or Access Request Form
  • Evidence your patients disability is or is likely to be permanent
  • Providing evidence of diagnosis

Access Request Forms (ARF)

Key points for GP’s to consider when filling in this form are:

  • The request to fill out an ARF is the beginning of the application process for the NDIS to the NDIA
  • Be thorough as possible. Not providing enough information is the main reason the NDIA rejects requests to access the Scheme.
  • The form needs to identify a diagnosis for a disability that is permanent or likely to be permanent
  • How the diagnosis impairs ability is what the NDIA are looking for. How does the Impairment affect the person’s life? Detail the functional impacts and what supports will assist in allowing the individual to live an ordinary life of inclusion, social and economically.
  • Areas reviewed in the form are communication, mobility, social interaction, learning, self-care and self-management
  • Detail the type of supports needed and the frequency that the supports need to be provided (this area can be brief). A letter from a community worker would be helpful here. If your patient is accessing community programs they are likely to have a key worker that can provide information that can help support their request to access the NDIS.
  • If you have any reports completed by a specialist, providing them to your patient will support the information in the ARF. The NDIA needs as much information as possible to make a suitable decision around supports that are reasonable and necessary.
