Crystal Palmer is a Woolgoolga local and mother of two young boys. Working shifts in the Hospitality Industry she found it hard to juggle her casual hours with her family commitments. And while had a strong work ethic, she lacked the confidence to start training and further education due to living with Dyslexia.
Needing assistance planning for longer term employment and managing her work/life balance, Crystal contacted CHESS Connect and spoke to mentor Alicia Andrews to sign up to the new Government program ParentsNext.
With the support of her mentor Alicia, Crystal was able to meet in a safe, family friendly space to plan her short and long term goals. Alicia also encouraged Crystal to reconsider training and linked her to a supportive Registered Training Organisation who understood her needs.
With a long term goal to become a Nurse and a supportive network in place Crystal commenced Cert III in Individual Support. During this time the ParentsNext program provided referral for the course, Nursing wear and fuel assistance. In August this year Crystal successfully completed her course.
After work placement Crystal applied for and achieved employment at Sawtell Catholic Aged Care, enjoying post placement support from her mentor through the ParentsNext program.
Crystal and her CHESS Connect mentor Alicia couldn’t be happier with the positive outcomes of Crystal’s journey. Crystal developed the self-confidence needed to achieve her goals and overcome the challenges she faced living Dyslexia.
Crystal is looking at a bright future ahead with her young family, she is currently studying for her Cert IV in Disability with plans to attend University to for her Bachelor of Nursing.
