The Smart, Skilled and Hired Youth Employment Program is a new service delivered by CHESS and our network partner CoAct that helps young people connect with training, mentoring and work experience so they can become work ready and kick start a fulfilling career.
Since launching this service in September we’ve had several successes within our local community!
We’d like to introduce you to Alec, a local from the Hastings region, who we recently connected with.
Alec moved to the Port Macquarie area from Glen Innes four months before connecting with CHESS and was actively looking for work in hospitality.
Alec had previous work experience in an Italian restaurant and was looking for employment that would ultimately lead to his goal of apprenticing as a chef.
Alec came to CHESS late last year and was interviewed by his Youth Employment Coach Judy. After completing his interview and questions Judy found Alec was motivated and job ready so she asked him to return to the office early the next day so they could hit the pavement and start marketing his skills and abilities to local employers.
Within only 30 minutes of visiting hospitality employers in town with Judy, Alec secured a contract for full-time employment in a large vibrant organisation with multiple businesses.
In a few short weeks of starting work Alec had increased his responsibilities to include food preparation and plating up. With the support of the Smart, Skilled and Hired program Alec was able to purchase work clothes, shoes and is currently looking into completing a food hygiene and safety course. Alec aspires to gain a cheffing apprenticeship through his current employer.
The Smart, Skilled and Hired program has been incredible in helping me gain full-time employment in a very short time. Since commencing with the role Judy has purchased me work clothing and shoes and we remained in contact weekly. I couldn’t be happier with the service and I have already recommended the program to some friends who are looking for work and want to be supported to find it. – Alec
