The Smart, Skilled and Hired Youth Employment Program is a new service delivered by CHESS that helps young people and young people connect with training, mentoring and work experience so they can become work ready and kick start a fulfilling career.

Since launching this service in September we’ve had several successes within our local community! We’d like to introduce you to Tommy, a Clarence Valley local who we recently connected with.

How Smart, Skilled & Hired supported Tommy towards employment

Thomas registered with us on the 20th of September 2017. The Smart, Skilled & Hired (SSH) team discussed his career options and what would be required to gain the type of work he wanted.

We provided his resume with a ‘new look’ and more in-depth information about his skills and abilities.

The SSH team also accompanied Tommy to the RMS Roadshow in Maclean and encouraged him to speak to labour hire agencies and companies with contracts for the highway. Initially he was shy, but knew that he had the support of his Youth Coaches nearby and we provided encouragement and introductions to people we knew.

On the 13th of October Tommy undertook his Traffic Control tickets through Country Hospitality Services in South Grafton with the help of some Smart, Skilled and Hired funding. One of the SSH Youth Coaches met him at the Training centre on the morning the course started, introduced him to other participants in the course that are currently in SSH as well, and introduced him to the trainer. She then returned in his lunch break with PPE gear that would be required on site the next day and to check that he was coping well with the training.

Once the course was completed, the SSH team followed up with contacts from the RMS Roadshow, and let them know that Tommy had completed his traffic control tickets and was keen to commence paid employment ASAP.

Into the future!

Tommy has since commenced employment with a large construction company as a labourer for the Highway upgrade, and advised that he is working approximately 10 hour days.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the SSH team for their support and encouragement. I have gone from working three hours a week to getting my tickets and working full time on the roads, and I couldn’t be happier. In just a few weeks my life has changed so much. Thank you guys, I really appreciate it”. – Tommy Vanagas
